they rip it up electric, then encounter amplifier problems. so, they play a whole bunch of acoustic regulars and rarities as the equipment issue is addressed. It isn't immediately clear if the amp thing got solved that night for more electric, but this show is unique, and it is interesting that the bust occurred that evening.

January 31, 1970 The Warehouse, New Orleans LA
Unbeatable acoustic set. Seasons of My Heart was originally written and recorded by George Jones in 1955, with covers by Johnny Cash and Kitty Wells (1960), Jerry Lee Lewis (1965), and Willie Nelson (1966). None of them come close to the Dead version.
"Beautiful - the accidental acoustic show following their release from jail due to a blown amp - I tell you, this is almost cinematically historical, it's so famous. "The electric stuff is well-done - Morning Dew in those days was more often played in the first set, and Jerry does it sweet justice. But the acoustic stuff is why you are here - they keep us abreast of the situation throughout these numbers - the first half-dozen or so for a nicely subdued, congenial Bobby, Jerry throwing some of his own tunes in there later. "The quality of this recording is what makes it so special - it's hissy, but so, so fragile and delicate, as the best-captured acoustic sets sound - they balance these old vs. new tunes on a knife's-edge throughout, and the energy here is positively, heatedly charged. It's this "negative space" that drives the show as much as any one of those strums on the acoustic guitar. "BTW, the night before has some wonderful electric material - don't overlook it!" ~doug_the_dude, LMA
"On this day back in 1970, the Dead headlined a three-band bill, just like the night before, opening up the legendary New Orleans rock and roll venue, The Warehouse. Of course, a great deal had transpired between the previous night’s show and this one. TC had parted ways with the band, leaving Pigpen as, once again, the only organist in the Dead. But probably of more historic import, the band had been “busted, down on Bourbon Street” when they returned to their hotel after the gig the night before. Today’s show had its own bit of surprises for the band, when a broken amp - they had been getting shocked by the sound system during Mama Tried - finally forced them to finish the second half of the show with an extensive acoustic set. "The playing on the electric portion is fairly standard 1970 fare, which is to say, quite tasty. The two Pig tunes - Big Boss Man and, especially, Hard To Handle - are the standouts, but everything in there is more than worth a listen. The acoustic section, though, is where the real gems are, starting with a far too uncommon Long Black Limousine. The rest of the way, the rarities are legion, and, often, the choicest. For instance, Bobby offers up some beautifully resonant vocals on Seasons, as he does on Bound In Memories. But, really, everything here is fabulous; just listen to the pacing on The Race Is On, Pig send Katie Mae with Jerry’s sparse blues licks, or the lovely playing on Been All Around The World." http://gratefuldeadoftheday.com/01-31-1970
