Reviewer: Steve K Rob - Subject: Nice and mellow!I'm listening to the first set now, and I find the music to be nice and mellow. I really am enjoying it. I know Bob sounds a little hoarse, but that's gonna happen sometimes. Desolation row is downright beautiful and piano heavy, I cannot speak to the sound quality of this recording as I am listening to another source. But I find the term uninspired may be referring to the overall mellowness and slowness of the pieces, especially in the first set. Give this one a chance with an open mind and you might find you enjoy it! One of only two shows in my (massive) collection from this date. The other was in 69
Reviewer: lobster12 - Subject: disappointing93 started off slow and really never got going especially with weir's vocal problems later in the year. This is a very disappointing show seeing as though they have a special guest and the second set should be epic but doesn't even come close.
Reviewer: markabes - Subject: Always fun with CarlosChinese New Years were always great nights, from the opening act to the parade. This show is strong into Drums, and then has the Carlos bonus. Although it seems a bit sloppy (and clearly not rehearsed much if at all) there is some great jamming in the other one, and the licks being traded off in the Stella are wonderful. Gloria was a treat any time
Reviewer: Terrapin31590 - Subject: Uninspired Playing, Poor RecordingAgainst my better judgment (no secret that 1993 is not exactly 1973 in Dead quality) I took a listen to this show based on the other review and have to file a strong dissent.
First, the sound quality is poor. I am generally not a fan of AUD recordings and this show is a good illustration of why. The sound is so LOW, particularly during the 2d set, you have to crank your system to "11" (so to speak) to really hear the music. In addition, the mix is horrible, as there is little separation of the musicians and the bass line is negligible.
Second, the playing itself is dull and uninspired. Jerry meanders around some themes in Eyes without ever taking the band in any direction. The Estimated jam fizzles long before it limps into Terrapin and while the Drums/Space segment is generally good, I rarely pluck shows based solely on it.
Third, Weir's voice is hoarse and weak, fortelling the problems he would have later that year requiring some minor vocal chord surgery.
Fourth and finally, where's Carlos. If you are going to plop a great guy like 'los up on stage with you, don't have him lope into a dull Gloria encore with 60 seconds left. Speaking of that encore, it sucked. Gloria is the kind of encore where when it's played well (see 6/15/93 for example) the steam should be rising from the stage. Here it just sorta sits there, not doing anything. Very disappointing.
For those who just HAVE to hear "good" 1993 (oxymoron?), I would suggest 6/19, 9/20, or 9/22.
Steer clear of this meatball.
Reviewer: Mushroom Mike - Subject: Chinese New Yeart '93Chinese New Year shows were always a treat and '93's was no exception. As usual there was an opening act and this year it was a troope of Chinese Acrobats. If you've never seen Chinese acrobats its hard to describe other than to say what they can do is truly unbelievable. Their finally was this girl up on a 20'unicycle doing this trick where she would kick bowls up on top of her head. She kept adding more and more bowls until she already had 15 or so on her head and six balanced on one foot. When she kicked the six up on top the crowd went absolutely nuts. People, including me, had tears of joy running down our face. Sure, the mushies I had eaten an hour before certanly helped but, seriously folks, Jerry and the Boys have never even gotten such an enthusiastic reaction from the crowd. I'm not kidding!
The acrobats were a hard act to follow but the Dead delivered. The first set was nothing out of the ordinary but well played. The 2nd set had a smokin Eyes>Estimated> Terrapin that led into the Drumz and Dragon Dance/Chinese New Year Parade. After Drumz we were given another treat as Carlos Santana came out for Space and played for the rest of the show. The Gloria encore was really rocking with Jerry and Carlos trading leads.
I should also mentiuon that the sound quality here is great. One of the best AUD I have heard. This one is well worth the download.
