Reviewer: PFflyerkid - Subject: ***** for Jack StrawRevised! 1-7-79 , a few days earlier is hot too. It doesn’t miss the “Jack Straw from Wichita cut his buddy down” mark, like this one does.
But…wow, some Jack Straw here. Jerry just takes off and then the band just jams it out. They're swinging so hard that it's hard for them to all come back as one but such a huge effort. Been searching the archives for killer Jacks and this is certainly one of thes best. Subs lyris: "We used to play for acid but now we play for Clive”
“2) at times in 1978-1980 Bob Weir sang "We used to play for acid ..." and "... now we play for Clive" (a reference to Clive Davis, the boss of Arista Records)--one example was 1 November 1979 (thanks to Edgar Avalos for confirming this)"
p.s. I saw the night before and was in 11th grade!
Reviewer: Garrick III - Subject: One of my first shows, (during a deepfreeze...)To Tom Donnely's review... I remember this run well, too, not only because 1/11/79 was one of my first shows, but also because it was A VERY COLD NIGHT, not conducive to "Tail-Gating" in the flat, mid-Island area known as 'Roosevelt Field'. I was a sophomore in H.S. too, where I grew up, (in Port Washington,), about 15-20 miles north of the Coliseum, and the first time the band returned to the area since I had become a hard-core "Head"!!! This night WAS MAGICAL, as any Dead

Reviewer: 92gli - Subject: Great recordingThis is a great audience experience. In my small listening room high volume gives you the 360 degree soundstage. The band is feeling it.
Reviewer: Dannydread - Subject: Great energyNice sounding AUD with an enthusiastic New York crowd obviously pushing the band to great heights..Jack Straw is a first set standout with a fierce delivery and Jerry rippin..Nice jammed out Miracle weighing in at 11 mins, good for Bobby fans.2nd set highlights:Estimated>Hes gone .Drums/space precedes a Truckin>O1>Stella run..Good for if youre after a hi energy ,heavy, jammed out, late Godchaux era barnburner...Thanx archive.
Reviewer: Groucho55 - Subject: "I feel like a dog with two dicks"I worked for Ren Grevatt, the Dead's East Coast PR guy during this time and I rode in the limo back to the Hilton in NYC with Jerry after this show -- he was quite pleased with the show and as he slid into the car, this was a direct quote (truth!). The night before he had given that show 1-10, a "C"
Funny guy.
Reviewer: southbay823 - Subject: NOT Mickey's b-daysorry, had to write this....many times during their career, the GD would step up to the mic and say it was one of the band member's birthday, when it was definitely not...they were only fucking with the audience, and this is just another example. I honestly cannot remember when the stepped up to the mic where it actually was someone's b-day. The smart audience members (deadicated) usually knew the truth when it came to actual birthdays, chanting "Happy Birthday" to either Jerry on 7/31/82 @ midnight or Phil on his 50th birthday (3/15/90), etc.

Reviewer: Tom Donnelly - Subject: 1-11-2012I grew up in Floral Park, New York. I was senior in High School and I can remember attending the show and the next morning, must have been about 40 classmates all wearing dead shirts from the show. walked the 7 miles home in 12 deg. weather, happy as could be.
i miss the 70's!! everything was much more simple and straight forward...
Reviewer: Wally Gator - Subject: sillycomplaints about this show and this recording seem rather silly. If you want to complain about something, how about Weir's slide guitar, especially on Sugaree. Otherwise a good show and a good recording.
Reviewer: erik65 - Subject: Too much clapping and whistlingI'm picturing someone holding a crutch with a microphone on top, held in place with duct tape...
If the crowd noise was in the background it would be OK. But it's just as loud as the band on this recording.
Reviewer: deadbass36 - Subject: A Matrix?Let's face it, the sdb has pretty sub-par sound compared to other boards from the late 70's. I guess it's kind of a shock it even exists, since for years we all believed there were no sdbs available from this tour. But, here it is. There is one well-circulated AUD (Gatto), but that's not the greatest sounding tape either.
That's why I think this might make a good candidate for a matrix ( are you listening Hunter). The boards hissy and muddy, and the audience is clappy and a little oversaturated. Might just make the worst matrix ever. Oh well, it just seems like too historic a show to wallow in such disrepair. Maybe not historic, but it is a great show---Sugaree, Jack Straw, Miracle, Estimated, Stella, Casey Jones are all great versions.
Thanks to Charlie Miller for doing what he could with the source material---What the hell happened to these tapes anyway???
Reviewer: JB - Subject: nice aud.decent show. bob comes in too damn early at the end of jack straw when jerry was rippin. listen to the stella!
Reviewer: Skippy61 - favoritefavoritefavoritefavoritefavorite - January 11, 2011 Subject: niceness...so sweetWow...what a great show I have only gotten to Peggy-o and I am hooked. To the reviewers that were there, that had to have been a magical night. To the tapers and up-loaders of not only this but all the shows...THANK YOU!! Reviewer: sugareesalibi - Subject: Oh Yeah! This is one fun show! High energy crowd with the band playing some great jams. New York loved the Grateful Dead!
Reviewer: Bassy Twang - favoritefavoritefavoritefavorite - January 11, 2009 Subject: It's Mickey's Birthday againDon't really see what's so big abount Jack Straw. Seems more like a Swizzle Stick compared to other Jerry tunes from this night....
30 years later. This Swizzles Stick still stands up straight.
Reviewer: Sugar23ee - - September 14, 2007 Subject: Jack Straw sails!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!For me Jack Straw was the high point of the night. Just had a flashback- was never big on going out to Long Island for alot of reasons, especially the drive home, but always did it anyway. One of the things that I really appreciate about this site is that it gives the listener the opportunity to hear the band and the metamorphsis like transformations that take place through their musical history.
Reviewer: Rabbit435 - Subject: Why?Decent show, but WHAT IS DONNA DOING AT THE END OF DEAL??? She has to have been, hands down, the most incompetent vocalist in the history of music, period. Absolutely horrible and impossible to listen to. I don't know how Deadheads of the mid-late 70's put up with it . . .
Reviewer: Rich D - Subject: Ramble on Rose!It appears no one mentioned the Ramble on Rose - very powerfull. A couple of vocal miscues, but it one of the best ever! Yeah, the I need a miracle is also great - 11 mins!
Everyone needs this show now! Sound is decent
Reviewer: nashman - Subject: BIG SHOWsome of the big jack straw dates i have noticed: 1-11-79,11-6-79,8-20-80,9-9-87, my friend and i agree this could be the best. bobby could have given jerry just a litlle more time at the end, jerry was just starting to really blossom, none the less, imho, best straw ever. And a huge show all around. Sounds like falling crystals in stella, beautiful. 11-6-79 recieved second on the jack straw for us. god i love that tune. big show.
Reviewer: johnny_so_hum - Subject: A Good StreamYes! I am Greatful and thankful this Holiday weekend to listen to a show I have never heard before. As I clean my home and generally be lazy this Saturday afternoon, I am rockin' out to a very good streaming Aud. It's like they are all with me here in my home. I reccomend giving this show a listen.
Reviewer: mattmarian - Subject: These were recheduled shows ( I believe)revised 11-26-06 Bobby definitely says " we used to play for acid now we play for Clive" it's clear as day on my brother's original tapes. I can hear it on the shn that I downloaded prior to takedown. (tears)
I was in the 9th grade , I was allowed to go to one Garden show on the 8th, These two shows mark the bands return to Nassau since 1973(the bust). (my first show was Englishtown) My older brother taped all 4 shows.(not these uploads) Quality was ok not great. No matter what anyone makes of these shows- just listen to jack straw on this nite. We all were giggling for weeks listening to the tapes and that one version became something of a legend - since no one could duplicate Jerry's speed and endurance even if they tried to make the sounds with their tongue.
Just give it a listen and smile.
I love these shows for the nostalgia and history as the 2 garden shows were the first ever (aside from the felt forum in 71). They may not be "classics " like all in 77 but they were special to me and a close group of friends - thanks to the uploader and the site - I have been searching for these for the better part of 15 years.
Reviewer: captain_trip_420 - Subject: Play for acid ....yesBob does sing " We Used To Play For Acid, Now We Play for Clive." I have been changing my review so often, because I go back with headphones and try to make sure if he said Clive or Lines..it is clive... CLIVE? -Yes, Clive Davis....lol
Reviewer: grendelschoice - Subject: Like many others here--First show as a youngsterI know we're just supposed to review the show/sound quality and I will--promise! But first I have to say how funny it is that so many of the reviewers so far seem to have been--like me--quite young when attending this show. It was my FIRST Dead show, and I was so young (14 at the time) that I remember walking around the Coliseum before the show and being embarrassed when a hippie chick saw me and my friend and said: "Look! Little DeadHeads!" Well, I WAS being chaperoned by Mom (Thanks, Mom!) I'm not sure she really "got it" but once they played that blistering JACK STRAW I was on the bus for good. It's such a joy to have found this show so many years later and to be brought back to that exact feeling of awe and "aural" ecastacy when the boys took off on the heart of straw.
This is a pretty good aud recording (4.0 for sound) and the show is mostly strong in the 2nd set. Terrific Stella, kick ass Casey Jones encore. Good solid, '79 performance. Feel free to consider the objective review a 4-star, rather than the 5 I gave it here for the sentimental value it has for me personally.
You never forget your "first time". ;-) GC
Reviewer: Merle211 - Subject:...now we play for Clive" is what Bobby is singing during the smoking Jack Straw. Check out the Birthday Brothers routine, mislabeled as Estimated Profit. Sugaree opening and Casey encore were rare for the time. Great memories of this show and the week. Like the other reviewer I also just missed St. Stephen here and in '83. There was a big Steal Your Face banner behind the stage that fans were shaking when the line came in He's Gone. A really good show.
Reviewer: squints777 - Subject: first showAhh! my first show! Missed The Stephen by one night!! And missed it in 83 again by one night. Oh well, Had a great time though. Somethings you just never forget. Somethings you try to.
Reviewer: TroubleAhead - Subject: Great show - great recordingThis is just a hot, hot show. Fast, loud, and it really seems like the band is having fun. Echoing earlier sentiments, this is perhaps the sickest Jack Straw I've ever heard. Jerry goes off unlike anything I've ever heard. Bobby and Phil catch a groove to accompany Jer and it's off to the races. Stream it and listen for yourself. Just a side note, Bobby sings "We used to play for Nassau..." not "acid", as the other reviewer mentioned.
The quality of the recording is also very very good. It really does sound like you're sitting in the first 10 rows.
Reviewer: nyc oldie - Subject: Jack StrawWow. I attended this show and had the tape soon after. The quality was not so great, but it sounded good.
26 years later it sure sounds good. I was also in 9th grade.
Reviewer: TylerEaves - Subject: Error in TrackingTrack 18 should be part of 'Space', 19 is Truckin', 19 TOO, etc. Beyond that, decent show. Not great, not bad.
