17 STUDENTS IN AREA ARRESTED

Nineteen persons, including 17 juveniles who are students at both Eureka High and the College of the Redwoods junior college, have been rounded up during the past five days by city police as part of a dope ring discovery stemming from what initially appeared to be routine arrests made at a "psychedelic dance" held at the Municipal Auditorium here last weekend. Investigating officers took time out this morning from their around-the-clock probe launched last Saturday night, to report to Chief C.E. Emahiser that their work has taken them into virtually all walks of the city's society and has left scores of parents as well as school officials in a shocked and puzzled state of mind. [ . . . ] Officers also disclosed they have confiscated some 10 lids of the narcotic in bulk form which they say would make enough rolled cigarettes to bring about $400 on the dope market. One of the pathetic ironies is that the teen-agers who have been purchasing the dope have been duped out of their money by their pushers since police report the dope has been gradually "watered down" with a material known as Asthmadore, a medicinal tobacco for asthmatics. However, a more tragic note in the continuing investigation is a report that one of the teenagers was sold a "bad batch" of LSD, causing him to go on a "bad trip" and resulting in a "freak out." Officers are attempting to confirm the report that the youth has had to be transferred to a Washington hospital where he's undergoing special care as he faces possible blindness. Officers said that while the $400 estimate may now seem high as dope market values do, they feel hundreds of dollars have changed hands since the traffic got under way some time during the 1967 summer vacation. Police stakeouts over the past six weeks culminated in the first arrests at the auditorium last Saturday night during the performance of "The Grateful Dead" and the "Quicksilver Messinger Service," two of several rock and roll bands performing there. More than 3,500 young people from all corners of the county attended the "psychedelic dance," where three of the youngsters were among the first arrested. Two were in the process of rolling a marijuana cigarette when apprehended, officers said. Law enforcement agents, directed by Lt. Robert Ludtke of the department's Narcotics Division, began uncovering an avalanche of leads which led to the arrests of...the 17 teenagers... [ . . . ] Sixteen of the youths, ranging in ages from 16 to 18, are reported to be high school students while the 17th attends the junior college at Beatrice. All of the juveniles have been cited into Juvenile Hall, on charges of danger of leading a lewd, indigent or destitute life and of breaking a law. [ . . . ] Officers reported the confiscated material contained traces of some other white substances in addition to the medicinal tobacco and the marijuana. They are awaiting a full report from the Bureau of Narcotics. Interrogations with the young suspects, police said, point to the fact that the majority of youngsters became involved only during the past three months. Earliest reports of involvement point to last summer and while several questioned admitted taking LSD, officers feel this began only in recent weeks. Officers credited the families of the youths with 100 per cent co-operation despite being both highly shocked and puzzled when apprised of their offsprings' involvement. Veteran officers also expressed surprise over finding that many of the youths come from no worse than average income families and several are from prominent families. Chief Emahiser closed out the interview with the declaration that his men will continue their investigations.

FOUR MORE ARRESTS BY EUREKA POLICE IN PROBE OF NARCOTICS

The number of arrests in the newly uncovered dope ring involving Eureka High students climbed to 23 yesterday when four more youths were cited into Juvenile Hall here.  However, investigating officers were quick to point out that the noteworthy aspect of this latest development was that the youths and their parents had contacted headquarters to reveal their involvement. [ . . . ] These latest four youths, ranging in ages from 16 to 17 years, have been cited into Juvenile Hall on charges of being in danger of leading an idle, lewd, dissolute and immoral life. And like all of the other juveniles apprehended, they have been released to the custody of their parents. [ . . . ] Investigators said the apprehensions yesterday resulted from telephone calls from the youths and-or their parents to report they were "mixed up in this ring and wanted to know what they should do about it." "We are taking this as a definite 'call for help' on the part of the parents and their youngsters," police said, "and at this point we can only urge that more of them do the same thing." Police stakeouts and surveillance initiated at least as much as six weeks ago led to the arrests of the three youths at the Municipal Auditorium here last Saturday night, which brought the entire investigation into public focus for the first time. Two of the youths were apprehended in the process of rolling marijuana cigarets from "a buy" of materials they had completed while a massive "psychedelic dance" was in progress at the auditorium. Official estimates placed the dance crowd at between 1,600 and 2,000 teenagers from all parts of the county, attracted to hear and see the performances of at least three widely known rock and roll bands - "The Grateful Dead," "The Quicksilver Messenger Service," and "The Headlights" - on tour from the San Francisco bay area. Many of the youths caught up in the police web told of attending the dance and describing it as "psychedelic." Officers assigned to patrol the auditorium during the five-hour affair reported viewing highly sophisticated lighting and equipment valued in the thousands of dollars that "really had the building wired for sights and sounds." They told of three large screens upon which were flashed hundreds of slides and uncounted footage of motion picture film that produced kaleidoscopic colors - dripping, oozing, melding, merging, waving, piercing - for the predominantly youthful audience. Officers also reported some film and slides flashed shots of nude female forms on the screens. "Wild" was the way one officer described the entire performance, and "a la discotheque" was the way another put it. In addition, after the dance officers also reported finding narcotics paraphernalia on the premises during clean-up operations. Meanwhile, the investigators, which embrace the city's entire police department and narcotics officers of the Humboldt County sheriff's office, re-emphasized that the probe is continuing and that both parents and school officials are co-operating "100 per cent."

This show is so hot, it should seriously be illegal ! Like a top-shelf cognag, or champagne only opened for special occasions. I would put this on say, if I wanted to see telephone poles shoot stars backwards, or a kaliedoscope of roman candles against the night sky. Or of course if someone just simply wanted an idea of this sort of thing. We jump right in the pudding on this one, no slow opening, straight into that Clementine! Miles Davis? Coltrane? No, this is a full frontal lobe assault to the cosmic senses, a wynde and unraveling of the many facets and layers of sequences and synapses not unlike any other, yet totally unique in their complete and utter cohesion. The movement, that swing. Perfection ! Then, pure Potato beauty!!!! "Last leaf fallen, bare earth where green was born" :) Wow like church this Sunday morn ! Bobby even tells us about Madonna, and the voices of the storm. Slowly, they gently puncture a membrane that defies holding back that which can't be seen. In visions the sun oozes up, and through broken windows, we're now 'out of the bottle' ! Fluid, they are somewhere beyond the rings of Saturn at the start of BCE, when someone double-checking the reserve fuel in the tank lets out that scream. Then that by and bye . . . . .and how they slingshot into a Spanish Jam that may be to me personally, the finest moments I've ever heard the Dead put down on record anywhere. At times it's like peeling away the paint from the walls ! I see other reviews below feel it as well, that 'orange skies and cotton candy' organ, someone else even writing "essential" ! I mean the whole band is so tight, marching with such purpose ! A determined moment in time, clawing their way deeper into the greater conciousness through a way too short pause of Caution. Then a jaw-dropping snap back against, injustice? War? Fierce !!!!! Seriously, turn that up and get down !! Passing an o too short astral belt on the keys nearing re-entry, we are trying to be pulled back past the stars early ! With one last wind-swept glance out the window, we finally fade out with a way too short but early Dark Star. Raw, with so much to say and do, yet still filled with wonder. In early '68 the possibilities were still endless. There was a digesting of everything that had happened the summer before, yet prior to MLK & RFK and furthermore, 1969 Manson, Altamont and beyond.

My absolute, all-time favorite 33:30 of Dead ! 5***** 10,000 Thank you's !!

The rest of the show is well played and the sound quality is quite nice.

Love the intro to dark star with phil and jer. Take a listen, never heard the intro played like that and kinda wish they would've fooled around like that more. Could be jerry foolin around, could've been wrong timing on jer's part. Either way, its little stuff like this that i love.

The Spanish jam i don't find nearly as good as 2/14/68, but it's still a smoldering version. Caution is just way too short, and the Dark Star goes nowhere.

But don't pass this one up, folks...not big on long jams but still oh so sweet...

Tom ads a very cool layer and the willingness to slow down permits deeper thought and better playing/mingling between jerry phil and bob, the pause and feedback portion after the first verse allows for a great transition up, almost unexpected. Spanish jam is cool too, but there are better span-jams in jan-february of 1970. Sure do love jerry's vocals in 68-69 he is in complete control. None the less these exploring jams are great.

A fabulous gig played while they were still recording Anthem of the Sun. Every song is a highlight, and every member of the band contributes enormously to an audio feast with transitions as smooth as any in their history. Pigpen on keyboards is at his best. The audio is good, and you can hear every instrument.

This is the first Clementine. A real rarity, Deadbase records only 5 performances of the jazzy Clementine, which has the feel of John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things. Sung by Jerry, Phil Lesh wrote it with Robert Hunter. Lesh has said that Coltrane was one of his main influences. "The Coltrane Quartet and the long jams they would do in one chord was a defining factor for us..." In a seemingly effortless transition, the jam changes time from 3/4 to 4/4 and slips into New Potato, a core part of Anthem but a rarity, performed only 26 times. Pigpen is in top form on keyboards here. Jerry’ delivers a spacious New Potato sound that is more deliberate than a lot of the 1967 performances.

This is only the second Born Cross Eyed, the first being 3 days earlier. It’s also a rarity, with only 14 performances. And it didn’t always follow New Potato, as it does on Anthem. The pair works well.

And, this is the first Spanish Jam, which arises out of a psychedelic transition from Born Cross-Eyed. This Spanish Jam>Caution is featured at the end the first disc of Grayfolded (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grayfolded , which every Dark Star fan should own). It is difficult to find a better Spanish Jam.

Spanish Jam transitions into a short Caution (under 2 minutes worth), going into a repeated pre-Dark Star riff. The first disc of Grayfolded ends with this pre-DS riff.

Reviewer: lemon lime partridge - Subject: that's it for me, other one...i don't think i'll ever make it back from this show...what an incredible elevator ride to the new forever! clementine. and oh! to hear born cross eyed...and how about this recording? it's so fuzzy in a most beautiful way...like some love-colored cosmic peach. saw someone was displeased with the vocals, but to me they sound gorgeous...really warm and a bit distorted which is orange skies, carnivals and cotton candy as far as i'm concerned. and on this last topic i'm certainly not the most informed, and i don't mean to be disrespectful - but that organ has to be TC, right? i've never heard pig play like that. like THAT! did i mention i'm only on spanish jam? this can only get better from here...

The true natural openness and experimentation is the best part- something the dead disappointedly lost later on going with MIDI and losing their country swing feel. Its great to hear any musicians really be into and loving their playing. I love the jazzy bluesy swing feel to the show particularly Clementine. Reminds me somewhat of Garcia with Legion of Mary. To bad it was lost later on. This show definetly is worthy of my first review. I've only recently stumbled onto this site and its great. ive never heard too much of the Dead before 69 and the site gives me a great oppurtunity to experience the dead throughout the years. Before I mostly listened to 69-78 but now I know the music better before and after- something i probalby would not have done with later years (cds are expensive and im 18). but people my age is jsut another great reason why there should be free downloads. With so much other music, today and before, buying remastered cds of shows of the same band(although different each time)without the experience of being at a show is nonsense. Ive already helped them out way too much.

In fact, the day I moved into town I met a nice group of people and went to see a Ziggy Marley show there, but that's another story. At one of the shows, L.O.S. perhaps, a buddy mentioned that the Dead had been there back in the day. I thought to myself: "there's one I'd like to get." I just knew the recording had to be lost to time if it had ever existed. BIG smile when I saw this one here; and it sounds great. I'd like to hear the whole Dark Star. Yes the title of my review says it all: Day late and a dollar short. I just found this site about a month ago, missing the download era. I discovered the band late- "Darkie", I'd never heard their music before going to Irvine 87' Friday alone on a whim. Never looked back 100+. Thanks for uploading this, to I.A. for having this site, to "the boys" for shows & so much more. And thanks to all of you for being the best people I ever met. Wow, Eureka Muni. and 1000's more;-)

This is so fine. Listen to Jerry's little bassy leads at the beginnining of the truncated Caution. Absolutly stunning especially after the squeal he let out on that Gibson a minute earlier at the end of Alhambra. Clementine is just sweet. The Drumming throughout the set is some of the finest by Micky and Billy in this era. TC (Dr F. How much of this organ is Pig? and I'm a Pig fanatic. If that is the late great Mr. McKernan on the B3 then nuff said....) is at his best and I'm not always a fan. I feel much of TC's playing,especially his fills,were dated and corny in a way the rest of the band was only sporadicaly. I much prefer Pig. Less learned more soul. Boy O! So much energy packed into such a short set..this is seminal stuff.

Reviewer: dr. flashback Subject: top 10!Another well traded 1968 that I had for years, but my copy was missing the short Dark Star at the end, so it's nice to have a more complete version. Why is this show so popular? For me, it's the inclusion of Born Cross Eyed, Caboose and Spanish Jam - songs which all appear on Anthem of the Sun, but strangely were dropped early in the year, and appear on too few bootlegs. In many ways, these 3 songs really capture the essence of the Haight Ashbury 68 Dead sound. Even more so than The Other One or Dark Star, which my ears connect more with 1969. The sound quality, except for the usual analog hiss, is amazing for a show this old. Probably only a minute or so is missing from Clementine. And what a great version! Very nicely jammed, and also a song unfortunately dropped too soon. This semi-jazz style points the way to later Bird Songs and Playins in 1972 and 73. A long and energetic version of Cross Eyed follows, then they tear the roof off with a no holes barred sequence of Caboose into Spanish Jam that may be the best I've heard for 1968. Will just absolutely melt your face. Both Phil and Pig's organ are well mixed and add to the incredible sound montage. You can almost SEE Jerry's tubes just glowing like fire as he burns his way through Spanish Jam. What a sound! I think even after other 1968 shows become available, this one will always have to be regarded as one of the year's best. Oh, if it were only longer!! Highly recommended, Dr, Flashback :-)

It is TRAGICALLY fantastic in it's incompleteness, but that makes what's available that much more precious. They were definitely "on" this night....and in fact, (I've been listening to each show in order...i'm up to this show as of today!) there is this sudden sense of "deepening", like the Dead sound EVEN MORE like THE Grateful Dead on this tape. The way the band slams into Born Cross Eyed....whew! Relentless! Clementine: heartbreakingly gorgeous! Thank you to the Archive, and the Archivist, the uploaders, everyone concerned!

For example, the purity of tone of Garcia's solo work in Spanish Jam is astounding to anyone who has ever tried the instrument. The recording quality is quite good for the vintage. The only downside are the vocals, which are minimal.

The Spanish Jam is wonderful, maybe the best of the era, and the short Caution jam trucks along powerfully before fizzling out way too early. I always felt this coulda been a great Caution if they just woulda kept going.

Listen to the Other One from 4/26/72 (hundred year hall). Phil plays one of his parts of Clementine during the long Other One jam. I think it is about 15 or 20 minutes in. I think this is on other europe 72 performances also.

First performance that circulates is 1/17/68, but its plausable, likely even that it was played prior that.

A fabulous gig played while they were still recording Anthem of the Sun. Every song is a highlight, and every member of the band contributes enormously to an audio feast with transitions as smooth as any in their history. Pigpen on keyboards is at his best. The audio is excellent, and you can hear every instrument. This is the first Clementine. A real rarity, Deadbase records only 5 performances of the jazzy Clementine, which has the feel of John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things. Sung by Jerry, Phil Lesh wrote it with Robert Hunter. Lesh has said that Coltrane was one of his main influences. "The Coltrane Quartet and the long jams they would do in one chord was a defining factor for us..." Pigpen is in top form on keyboards here. Jerry’ delivers a spacious New Potato sound that is more deliberate than a lot of the 1967 performances. This is only the second Born Cross Eyed, the first being 3 days earlier. It’s also a rarity, with only 14 performances. And it didn’t always follow New Potato, as it does on Anthem. The pair works well. And, this is the first Spanish Jam, which arises out of a psychedelic transition from Born Cross-Eyed. This Spanish Jam>Caution is featured at the end the first disc of Grayfolded (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grayfolded , which every Dark Star fan should own). It is difficult to find a better Spanish Jam. Spanish Jam transitions into a short Caution (under 2 minutes worth), going into a repeated pre-Dark Star riff. The first disc of Grayfolded ends with this pre-DS riff. There are four versions of this set here at Archive.
