Pacific Alliance Benefit - "Stop Nuclear Power"
Ear-candy Holwein tape (great LL>S) with the sweet sound that comes from a classic theater.
Built in 1931 and designed in the Mission Revival style reminiscent of a colonial Spanish town featuring a fountain and villas, the 2,000-seat Arlington Theatre was originally a showcase movie house for Fox West Coast Theaters. It was restored and expanded in the mid-1970s by Metropolitan Theaters Corporation. It opened in its current incarnation in 1976.
Archive reviewer sugareesupreme was also impressed with the Millerized board:
"Hard for me to give less than four stars to a beautifully sounding board (I'm not too picky) with Jerry not in his 83-86 slump. It's the Dead - off-nights beat anything else going on in town. That being said, the second set sounds a bit like a rehearsal. The Dancin' never really gels and the narrator in Wharf Rat never gets to Fly Away. Truckin' peaks nicely but watch out for the coitus interuptus with the encore - Sugar Mag cuts out prior to climax. First set has its moments. I've been listening to this January California tour to see where they picked up after '77. Jerry was vocally challenged the whole time, but setting that aside, they really don't seem like the same band that burned down the house the previous year. Still, I get nostalgic thinking about them winding their way, really for the last time, through those cow towns like San Bernadino, Bakersfield, Stockton, etc. that they'd grown up playing but would not soon revisit."

Reviewer: danlynch - Subject: "Space" really is a "Jam"...and an excellent one at that. There's very little of the "space" aspect of these segments of the show, but more just a lot of experimenting with themes, including one brief shot at "Close Encounters" (there are several during this month before the full blown version in Eugene), and several teases of Wharf Rat before it get there entirely. This Jam is really the highlight of this show.
Reviewer: sandeen - Subject: We all BenefitThis show was a Stop Nuclear Power benefit. My 8th show, it was a beautiful venue. Donna was in top form (yes, I know some of you may not believe it, but she could be great). There was some trouble with the ushers in this venerable theater expecting us to stay in our seats (!) - not a reasonable expectation for Dead Heads. Uncle BoBo (Bill Graham) came out to apologize for the ugliness & offer free admission at Bakersfield if we showed our benefit ticket stubs. Always a mensch, our Bill!
Reviewer: thelegroom - Subject: Alternate BurnThanx Reinhart, Bob, & Derek. This show has escaped my ears until now. Decent recording though there is some cracking sounds when music gets loud. Very upbeat and energetic. I love the Phil/Drums segment and the Space to follow is quite good. There is a hint of Jerry's laryngitis, not nearly as noticeble as Fresno 2 nights later. If your software will allow an overburn, you can put Bertha>Good Lovin' on the end of disc 1 leaving most of set 2 intact. You will only need 2 discs as well. I am playing Mexicali>Big River on my radio show tomorrow. Peace
