Our recording opens up with some fun banter between Bobby and Jerry. Then someone gets on the mike, introduces the band, and invites the audience to what would become the infamous Altamont Free Concert. The band then gets things rolling with a solid Casey Jones. After that, a stretch of tuning and mindless playing starts to coalesce into a stunning first version of Black Peter. Some further announcements and additional tuning follow on Black Peter’s heels before fairly routine versions of Big Boss Man, Me And My Uncle, and Cumberland Blues comes out. Then a clipped Dire Wolf leads us to a positively beatific Dark Star, which is mesmerizing from start to finish. We could listen to this thing on repeat for the rest of our lives and be happy. Afterwards, a mournful, plaintive lament in the form of High Time meanders out, as beautiful as it is chilling. Then Pig takes the lead with a slow Schoolgirl and an upbeat Good Lovin’. The Good Lovin’ starts out strong, heads into a lengthy drum solo that has some tasty rolling beats, and finally comes back with a sensational, Phil-heavy, band in mind-meld return to the theme. From there, TC’s organ ushers in a heady, acidy China Cat that Jerry and the rest of the boys quickly join in on. As China Cats were wont to do by this point in ’69, it heads into I Know You Rider, which contains an inimitable psychedelic folk style that is delightful. Finally, we get the first version ever of Uncle John’s as an encore. While there are definitely better ’69 shows out there, this one has some great moments and has a lot of historic value.
